OpenStack Cloud : Beginners Guide

OpenStack is an Open Source cloud .

You will need to determine your organization’s regulatory compliance needs, financial resources, preferred spending model, users’ geographic locations, and predictability of demand.

Your criteria will provide an initial guide to determining if a private, public, hybrid, or community cloud is best for your organization.

Cloud Deployment Models :

1.PRIVATE :A single organization can be multiple consumers
 • Can be a single or multi-site deployment
 • Can be on- or off-premises
 • Can include multiple consumption models such as managed, distribution (distro), and build your      own system (DIY)
• Offers subscription, buy, or build options

2.PUBLIC:
• Shares infrastructure, multi-tenant
• Is generally multi-site and off-premises
• Normally includes pay-as-you-go pricing

3.HYBRID:Can be single or multi-tenant
• Can include any combination of two (or more) distinct clouds bound together
• Is multi-site

4.COMMUNITY:A cloud that is provisioned for a specific community (e.g. research institutions) that wants to pool resources and facilitate collaboration
• Can be shared infrastructure, and be multi-tenant
• Can be on- or off-premises

Components
OpenStack Cloud Platform constitutes of mainly following components:
  • Compute: Nova
Brings up and maintains operations related to virtual server as per requirement.
  • StorageSwift
Allows you to store, retrieve & remove objects (files).
  • Image Registry/DeliveryGlance
Processes metadata for disk images, manages read/write/delete for actual image files using  'Swift' or similar scalable file storage service.
  • Network Management: Quantum/Melange
Provides all the networking mechanisms required in any instance or environment as a service. Handles network interface cards plug/un-plug actions, ip allocation procedures along-with capability enhancement possible to virtual switches.
  • Block StorageCinder
Enables to attach volumes for persistent usage. Detach them, snapshot them.
  • WebUIHorizon
Provides usability improvement for users or projects for managing compute nodes, object storage resources, quota usages and more in a detailed web-app way.web dashboard
  • AuthenticationKeystone
Identity management system, providing apis to all other OpenStack components to query for authorization.
  • Billing ServiceCeilometer
Analyzes quantity, cost-priority and hence billing of all the tasks performed at cloud.
  • Cloud Template: Heat
Build your entire desired cloud setup providing OpenStack a Template for it.
  • OpenStack CommonOSLO
Supposed to contain all common libraries of shared infrastructure code in OpenStack.
